Abstract/Overview

Small campus networks usually do not have a set of rules for users to access the network in order to protect network resources and enforce institutional policies (for instance, no sharing of music files or no gaming). This leaves network administrators of such campuses with little option over their bandwidth and network and they end up facing issues like congestion and slowness. Therefore, accurate and early network traffic analysis and policy enforcement is an essential step for campuses to effectively manage their bandwidth issues. Hence, bandwidth management is a viable project which gives us lots of opportunity to assess the network behaviors. In this project, network is analyzed using different tools like OpenDNS and Mikrotik Router using real data generated by the students at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University, Kisumu campus. The top websites browsed for each day are documented for a period of one week. Different websites were being browsed that included mostly educative websites, some entertainrnent websites and • few malicious websites as well. This analysis in tum helped us make a bandwidth policy that shows how the internet for the campus is managed, what websites need to be blocked or limited and what bandwidth rules need to be set for users. Finally, the project also aimed at enforcing the bandwidth policy into action in the campus and also provides vital information about the internet usage trends in the university that can later be used for other analysis.
