Abstract/Overview

Kisumu City’s food system is shaped by forces that go beyond the county and national governments. While a few of the existing regulations directly focus on food security, their implementation is weak. Furthermore, the absence of a policy on specifically urban food security means that the existing plans, policies, and laws inevitably impact on the city’s food system in ways that are rarely acknowledged and which often do not enhance food security. This chapter will outline the often indirect, unintentional, and rarely acknowledged ways in which planning and governance have shaped food systems in Kisumu City.
