Proactive Behavioral Strategies for Freshmen with Inappropriate Behaviors at Universities: Implications for Inclusive Education

Abstract

The primary aim of proactive behavioral strategies for students with inappropriate behavior is to avoid triggers that may make students experience events or situations that embarrass them, frustrate them, or frighten them and may easily follow as an emotional response which may easily escalate to inappropriate behavior. This chapter aimed to analyze literature on proactive behavioral strategies for freshmen with inappropriate behaviors at universities. Literature review was adopted as the methodology. The findings from reviewed literature indicate that without proper support system, students are likely to feel overwhelmed and resort to inappropriate behaviors to resolve their problems. The study recommends the following proactive strategies, building self-confidence among students, use of peer group therapy, and use of cognitive-behavioral approaches.
